Free Will... Do we have it or do we not?

For Sunday, May 11th's sermon, I went down several rabbit holes that kind of blew my mind.

And one thing that really got me was a video of "Two Astrophysicists Debate Free Will".

SERMON SPOTLIGHT: Sunday July 12, 2026 Proper 10A

The Rev. Aron Kramer, Rector St Edward's Episcopal Church Sunday, July 12, 2026 Genesis 24:34-38, 42-49, 58-67 Psalm 45: 11-18 Romans 7:15-25a Matthew 11: 16-19, 25-30 Going through old sermons, I found one I preached years ago that ended with a plea. I asked that we let the Word of God break out of the box we had contained it in. I said the call to sow, the same call we hear about in today's Gospel, is not for us, not for this congregation, this gathered people, it is for everyone else in the world, those we love and those we do not, those we know and those we do not. I said: sow your seed. Let it all go. That was twenty or so years ago. And I have learned something in the years since that I did not know when I preached those words. I have learned that the box we tend to put God into serves excellent snacks and mediocre coffee. You all here at St. Ed’s are the most hospitable people I have ever served with. I want you to hear that, because I mean it, and because I am not goin...

Amen. Their Story Fr. Damien was born Joseph de Veuster in 1840 in Belgium, the son of a farmer. At the age of 18, he joined the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. He made his first vows in 1859 and took the name Damien, after the ancient physician and martyr. When his older brother became ill and was unable to join the mission endeavor in Hawai‘i, Damien volunteered to take his place. As Father Damien began his ministry in Hawai‘i, leprosy was spreading...

SERMON SPOTLIGHT: Easter 6A, The Rev. Aron Kramer

The Rev. Aron Kramer, Rector St Edward's Episcopal Church Sunday, May 10, 2026 Acts 17:22-31 Psalm 66:7-18 1 Peter 3:13-22 John 14:15-21 Last week I asked: what if the God you are waiting to meet is already outside? Outside the walls, the building, the places we have designated as holy. Already in the street, the wrong places, the off-center places, in the Galilees of our lives. Today's Epistle has been niggling at my brain for years. I always find myself unsettled by this text. But I had a revelation this week, and I wonder if we have in this story an answer to that question. Paul is standing in the middle of Athens, and he is upset. Acts tells us Paul was distressed — the Greek word is paroxynō. It is a visceral word, meaning agitation, close to rage. He has walked through this city and the sheer number of religious shrines and devotion has undone him. Every corner, every street, another shrine. Ancient writers said Athens had more gods than people, and something about it uns...
