THURSDAY THOUGHTS

I have gotten into the habit of bringing the dogs along with me to work. And one might think that the big Black Lab would be the biggest problem. Well, he is actually becoming trained, other than leaping up on people to give them hugs, he's coming along really well.

No, the biggest problem of the two canine children is this little bugger. 


This is her shortly after she climbed up on my desk, hiked across it to her pillow sitting on the side of the desk. Once there she sits and stares at me. Either telling me that the better place for her would be in my lap, or she's saying, don't move, I'm the boss of you and you must do what I tell you. I am about to go to sleep and if you leave, I will eat your toes.

Then se promptly falls into a full body shaking sleep mode where she opens her eyes at every little sound that comes to her ears. Which are always raised and listening, or pulled back as they are in the next picture.


Lastly, there is of course, this beast as well, who despite having his own bed in the office, often sleeps soundly on the floor, NEXT to his bed. If he's on his bed, then he's on his back with his feet in the air, lips hanging down, snoring away. 


I am grateful for all the parishioners who put up with these two and their enthusiastic welcomes when you walk into Church. They love it here, and they love seeing people coming to Church.

PARKING LOTS: SANCTUARY, REFUGE, HAVEN

Some of you might notice this coming Sunday we have one less plastic bottle of water in our inventory. On Wednesday evening, before I was leaving to go to my soccer game, I watched as a car pulled into our lot. As they pulled in it looked like their car was packed to the hilt with blankets and pillows, all white and pressed against the back windows.  As they turned to park, I saw the rear of their car had been smashed. Those white pillows and blankets were the side air bags, deployed. An Asian man, his wife and 2 children got out of the car, clearly shaken. I stopped and asked if I could help but they were discombobulated, unsure what to do. I am sure it didn't help that I was dressed in my soccer attire not looking at all priestly. After navigating with them that I was ok and not going to deport them, I asked if they would like some water or if they needed to use the bathroom. SERMON: Pentecost 4, Proper 9, July 6, 2025

When someone says the word mission, what do you think about? What is the first thing that comes to mind when you say the word, mission? I asked this question in a sermon in 2001, and the overwhelming response was, the Mormons who go around door to door selling Jesus. The young men in white shirts and blue or black pants and a tie, knocking on your door. That was an overwhelming understanding of the word mission about 24 years ago. Some other responses I heard to that question were the arrival of the pilgrims and the immediate exploitation and subversion of the indigenous population residing here. The Poisonwood Bible was released right around that time and had become popular, it depicted a certain style of mission work as well.
